Elegant and very particular thermal jug, the structure is made of wood and inside there is the silvered glass part with a double cavity (Sir James Deward's vase) with cap for hermetic closure; the external part is covered with lacquered goatskin, a very difficult precision procedure; the jug is finished with elegant and refined brass parts in correspondence of the mouth and of the slender and graceful handle; The thermos was designed by the Italian designer, furniture maker, and decorator Aldo Tura (1909-1963) and produced between 1949 and 1951 by the company he founded in 1939, in Cusano Milanino (Lombardy-Italy). Working between the trends of Art Deco and modernism, Tura created luxury accessories and unique furniture that were characterized by rich materials, sculptural forms, and exclusive craftsmanship techniques. In the post-war years, while many furniture manufacturers were adapting their working methods to mass production, Tura continued to engage in traditional Craft methods. He preferred complex forms and labor-intensive processes that could never be replicated in a large-scale production system. His mix of Art Deco, Art Nouveau style with Minimalist modern design went beyond the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship. In his designs he used a wide range of unusual materials such as goatskin, eggshells, parchment, and wood veneers, employing his most beloved colors of yellow, red, and green. The Brooklyn Museum in New York has several of Tura's works, which were originally displayed in the traveling exhibition "Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today." Many of his products are true collector's items, particularly creations such as our thermos finished in goatskin and parchment. As we have said, Tura never adapted to the Industrial process and this has determined that even today there are only a limited number of his objects on the market. The rounded shape of our jug with its very elegant yellow leather upholstery binds well with the brightness of the metal applications giving us an object worthy of one of the greatest names in Italian design. Measures: diameter cm.20, height cm.25. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

Aldo Tura

One of the most enigmatic and polarizing figures to emerge in Italian design, Aldo Tura is an outlier in the world of mid-century furniture. The designer’s glamorous bar carts, coffee tables, cabinets and more resist categorization and draw inspiration from Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Baroque, Surrealist and modernist styles.

Tura moved through distinct phases in his career in terms of aesthetics, influences and finishes, rendering his life’s work exciting and diverse. Despite these phases, he held a singular devotion to one material: lacquered goatskin. Tura established a furniture production house in 1939 in Lombardy, and some of his early work focused on tables, decorative lamps and more. He later expanded to bar furnishings like rolling carts, cabinets and complementary barware accessories like ice buckets and cocktail shakers. The eccentric, gleaming and luxe surface of lacquered goatskin was a constant, along with eggshell, parchment and leather.

By the 1950s, Tura had begun to use hand-painted figural panels on the surface of cabinets, serveware (such as carafes) and other pieces. He even replicated famous works by artists like Monet and Bruegel the Elder and art from the Middle Ages, sometimes playfully embedding the paintings on cabinets shaped like oversize books. Even though he had a favored color palette of rich chocolate browns and deep emeralds, his style remained consistently hard to define.

Tura was unlike most of his Italian contemporaries but held a similar reverence for the nation’s traditional craftsmanship and artisanal techniques. He never followed the growing trend of mass-produced, industrial furniture and stuck to creating small, meticulously handcrafted collections. This principled choice means that today, a Tura piece is a rare and highly coveted collectible. The Tura firm continues to operate in Brianza, promoting Italian craftsmanship and the eclectic materials embraced by their namesake designer.
