19th Century Derby Porcelain Regency Imari Style Tea Service for 12

About

A Regency-style Derby Imari partial tea service comprising 12 teacups and saucers and one dish. Imari ware originates in late 17th-century Japan, when craftsmen around Arita created brightly colored, highly gilded export porcelain to cater to European tastes. The porcelain was shipped from the port of Imari, thus the wares’ namesake. English manufactories, like Derby, were inspired by the elaborate colors and designs and began to create their own. Here, we can see a very famous Derby Imari pattern known as the ‘Witches’ pattern. The prevalence of this pattern on Derby porcelain created throughout the 19th and 20th centuries is a testament to its beauty. It is rare to find this pattern on pieces from the early Derby era such as our tea service, which dates circa 1820. The set comprises 1 dessert dish, 12 teacups, and 12 saucers (25 items in total). Condition: Excellent. Gilding in exceptional shape. One cup with hairline to rim measuring 1.1 cm, one cup with hairline to rim measuring 1.8 cm, one cup with L-shaped crack to rim covering an area of approximately 3 cm. One saucer marked with permanent marker on reverse. Slight discoloration on some corresponding with original use. Dimensions: Teacup - 3 1/2 in. D x 2 in. H (9 cm D x 5.2 cm H) Saucer - 5 1/2 in. D x 1 1/4 in. H (14 cm D x 3 cm H) Dish - 8 1/4 in. D x 1 1/2 in. H (21 cm D x 3.5 cm H) Marks: 16 pieces with the printed mark large crown in red with large D dating to the 1820s. 3 saucers with the painted mark crown above crossed batons and D below dating 1806-1825. Dish unmarked.
