About the Item

A stylish vintage pitcher and matching wash basin, crafted from Old Paris Porcelain and featuring intricate gilt decoration of palmettes and leaves on a white background. The jug is elegantly shaped, with a high, arching handle and wide spout – perfect for pouring warm water, while the basin is deep with a gently flared gilt rim. Once an indispensable bedroom accessory in the days before ensuite bathrooms and hot and cold running water, warm water for washing would be brought to the bedroom for the morning ablutions. This wash-set dates from the early 19th century French Empire period, and does show some wear to the gilding and a crack in the basin, in keeping with its age and usage. However, the set has retained all of its original glamour and elegance, and would make a fabulous decorative piece in a bathroom or bedroom.
