About the Item
Chinese export porcelain early armorial plates,
Arms of Van Gellicum, Dutch Market,
Kangxi period, 1710-1730.
The Imari armorial plates were made for the Dutch family, Van Gellicum. An armorial in the centre and on the sides a floral scroll border, the rim with rocks, flowers, leaves and zig-zag lines. The zig-zag lines represent a thunderbolt, seen on Delft faience of the first quarter of the 18th century and based on Japanese patterns.
Dimensions: 8 3/4 inches diameter x 3/4 inches high.
This coat of arms, a Chevron between three eagles and a bezant, in chief an unidentified charge; the crest is a heron-like bird with an eel (or snake) in its beak between two wings, was borne by the Van Gellicum family.
Harmen van Gellicom, a native from Gorinchem The Netherlands, who was kwartiermeester (quarter-master or leading seaman), on four East Indiaman sailing on behalf of the Dutch East India Company, (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC), Chamber of Zeeland to Batavia between the years 1728 and 1736.
The date of this porcelain correlates with his time in the Indies.

The attractive Chinese Export crested armorial marriage plate has a central design with shields, each with a different gilt cyphers, flanked by angels blowing horns with above a crown. The inner well with a gilt chain design and the border rim painted with four flower groupings.
This type of design was made to celebrate a wedding.

Circa 1760
The Chinese Export armorial porcelain oval dish with overall Bianco Supra Bianco has a central Rococo armorial coat of arms centered with three garlands with the motto "His Ornari Aut Mori" below. The armorial surrounded by scattered flowers and four shaped gilt bordered panels on the shoulder with two bouquets of famille rose flowers and two of fruit.
The motto translates as To be adorned with these, or to die, referring to the three wreaths in the coat of arms, woven of olive, laurel and oak leaves. The three leaves representing sapientia, doctrina ac rei militaris peritia, "wisdom, learning and military expertise."
The reverse with a bamboo band with fruit and flowers with scattered flowers to the top, bottom, and each side.
The gilt rim on the border now rubbed.
