Hand Painted and Gilt Porcelain Cabinet Plate

About the Item

A beautifully hand painted and gilt porcelain cabinet plate. This is a reproduction of a depiction of Die Parzen (The Three Fates). Of the Imperial Viennese period. Likely made in Germany per the marking on the back. Acrylic stand not included. The Three Fates is a Greek mythological story. In the story of Homer and the Fates, the three daughters of Zeus determined Homer's destiny by spinning him the thread of mortal life. Clotho, "the spinner", held the distaff; Lachesis, "the apportioned", drew and measured the thread; Atropos, "the inflexible", cut it. As Goddesses, the Fates on one hand represented the order of human lives and on the other, cruelty, since they paid no regard to the wishes or requirements of mortals. Each outlying circle in red includes a gilt iconographic narrative element of a story using three women cast against a pastoral background. A wonderful and masterful tapestry of red, gold, and light rose colored patterns circles around the painted scene. The figures and scene are excellently lighted and have appropriate visual contrast. There are a few markings on the back. The most visible mark is a number 36604. The other mark in faint colors and cursive reads “Die Parzen” and the other below the number reads “Germany.” In excellent condition. Would make a great highlight in any dining room, kitchen, or great room. Measurements: Width: 9.5" / 24.13 cm Depth: 9.5" / 24.13 cm Height: 1" / 2.54 cm
