About the Item

A rare and early pair Swansea, Welsh, hand painted porcelain breakfast cups hand painted in the Chinese famille rose style with the Mandarin pattern dating from around 1814. Both cups are similarly painted with Chinese figures, one lying beneath a tree in a garden and a further two coming out of a house. The scene is painted in typical Chinese palette using brightly colored enamels on a white ground. The cups have shaped handles with a conical shaped bowl on a narrow round pedestal base. The cups are further painted around the inside rim with butterflies amidst flowering blooms, including gourds and other flowers in the Chinese taste. And set within a red and gilded linear border with further gilding to the handle and foot rim of the cups. The cups are not marked. Provenance: acquired from the British Art market. Both cups have hairline cracks near the handle however both are otherwise in good condition with bright paintwork and only minor rubbing. Both display well.
