About the Item
Marie and Julian Martinez Black Ware Jar. Black on black with graphics on upper shoulder. Well signed. Maria and Julian Martinez, of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, are internationally renowned 20th-century American potters. Inspired by the findings of archeologists, Maria and her husband led a revival of ancient pottery styles among Pueblo artisans. Between 1918 and 1943, Maria shaped the pots and her husband Julian painted the designs. He was the first acknowledged male artist of their Pueblo to do so. 7"D x 5"H (Cisco's Gallery has one of the largest collections of Martinez pottery in all sizes) Check us out!

Maria Martinez Blackware Pottery Jar, San Ildefonso Pueblo, Feather Design
By Native American Art
Located in Denver, CO
This exquisite blackware jar is an iconic work by famed San Ildefonso Pueblo artist Maria Martinez (1887–1980), one of the most celebrated Native American potters of the 20th century. Known for pioneering the black-on-black pottery technique, Martinez developed a unique style that combines a sleek, polished slip glaze with matte black designs—creating a dramatic contrast of light, shadow, and texture.
Featuring a classic feather motif, this hand-coiled jar beautifully reflects Pueblo symbolism and Martinez’s refined artistic vision. Measuring 4.5 inches high by 6.75 inches in diameter, with a 4-inch mouth opening, its elegant proportions and luminous surface make it a standout display piece.
