Staffordshire Pearlware Bocage Figure Watch Holder, circa 1820
About the Item
Staffordshire Pearlware Bocage figure watch holder, circa 1820. It is decorated in the round, (to the front and back.) This is a fine example of a Staffordshire pottery pearlware watch holder with two cherubs flanking a pillar, the watch holder is surrounded with good bocage. A charming feature of this figure are the two birds perched in the bocage which is topped with three feathers. The enamel decoration and bocage modelling is exceptional on this very colorful group. Staffordshire Pearlware watch holders are rare. This "Pocket Watch Holder" would have been prominently displayed on a gentleman's desk or night stand. At night gentleman usually hung their pocket watches on special stands. Because the face was raised and visible, this had the effect of converting the pocket watch into a clock. Watch holders were made of many materials, including wood, china, metal, and bone. The Staffordshire factories made a variety of holders in bright colors and shapes. A development of these was the larger stand which had a recess for a small clock with a watch like face. The pocket watch shown in the photo is not included.
