English Staffordshire Watch Holder with Scottish Figures and Lambs

About the Item

English Staffordshire watch holder with two figures and a pair of lambs, mid-19th century. Beautifully decorated and lambs have grainey decoration. This "Pocket Watch Holder" would have been prominently displayed on a gentleman's desk or nightstand. At night gentleman usually hung their pocket watches on special stands. Because the face was raised and visible, this had the effect of converting the pocket watch into a clock. Watch holders were made of many materials, including wood, china, metal, and bone. The Staffordshire factories made a variety of holders in bright colors and shapes. The pocket watch shown in the photo is not included.
