Art Nouveau Jardinière With Floral Openwork Decoration, WMF Germany, Ca 1900

About the Item

Diamond-shaped silver-plated vessel standing on four cantilevered feet, slightly flared body with openwork ivy leaf decoration playing around the heart-shaped cartouches set centrally on the front and back, entwined tendrils on the sides forming the handles. Original, well-fitting glass insert with a curved upper edge corresponding to that of the vessel. Strongly influenced artistically by the sculptor Albert Mayer (1867-1944), who was appointed artistic director at WMF in 1894; characterised by the combination of naturalistic and rococo elements, typical of the late 19th century, as well as the willowy female figures, ribbons and tendrils - modern, playful surface structures and functional forms.
