Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver Fruit / Bon Bon Dish (1901)

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Edwardian English sterling silver bon bon / fruit dish; an addition to our dining silverware collection. This exceptional antique Edwardian sterling silver bon bon/fruit dish has an oval boat shaped form onto an oval pedestal foot. The flared body of this sterling silver dish is embellished with pierced vertical pales accented with circular motifs. The body is further embellished with fine and impressive applied festoons decoration suspended from oval floral motifs and incorporating tied leaf festoon bordered cartouches. Each cartouche bears the contemporary bright cut engraved crest of two hammers in saltire, thereon a cock regardant, all above the motto 'En martelant' - Through hammering*. The upper rim of the dish is embellished with cast and applied floral rosette, festoon and scrolling leaf decorated borders, incorporating an impressive raised handpiece to either end. The well of this fine example of antique silverware is plain and unembellished. The oval domed pedestal foot is encompassed with further pierced ornamentation with festoons designs. This exceptional Edwardian silver fruit dish, crafted by the silversmiths John Bodman Carrington of Carrington & Co, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. * These heraldic markings pertain to the Martin family; associated to Edward Pritchard, J.P., of the Hill, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Glamorganshire. Condition This antique fruit dish in sterling silver is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The pierced, cast and applied decoration is all very sharp and the bright cut engraved heraldic markings are very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of antique silverware.
