About the Item

Pair of candlesticks, Empire, around 1810, patinated and fire-gilt bronze Height 29 cm, diameter base 12.5 cm Empire candelabra: works of art French Empire candelabra and Empire chandeliers are refined works of art. Especially when they were designed by top bronziers such as Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) or Claude Galle (1758-1815). They are the finishing touch when decorating a luxury home in the French antique style. There is always a place for them. You can place them above the fireplace or next to an Empire clock or bronze statue. A pair of Empire candelabra also looks stunning on a console or as decoration on a festive table. What are candelabras? French candelabra are a pair of candlesticks with several arms. The word ‘candelabra’ is a Latin term meaning ‘candle tree’. This is due to the candelabra's many branches or arms sprouting from a single column, similar to a tree and its branches. From the candlestick, French candelabra were developed for places where more than one candle is required to provide sufficient light. However, due to their impressive size and often elaborate design, they soon became highly decorative and desirable objects of decorative art. They could impress guests at a dinner party and show off their good taste and wealth. They became particularly popular in the 19th century.
