Sterling silver vase by Tapio Wirkkala for Kultakeskus

About the Item

This sterling silver vase, designed in 1954 by Tapio Wirkkala and executed by Kultakeskus Oy in 1959, stands out for its sleek and refined design. The vase features an oval shape with two elegant accolades on either side that taper upwards in a loop and terminate in outwardly curling lips, embodying Wirkkala’s signature ability to blend organic forms with refined craftsmanship. Cataloged as model TW 36 in Wirkkala’s oeuvre and released in serial production in a single size of 19 cm in height, this particular piece is a fine early example, fully hallmarked and preserved in good vintage condition. Bearing the hallmarks TW (Tapio Wirkkala), 916H (Sterling 916/1000 silver fineness), Kultakeskus Oy mark (reclining lion), Finnish National Control mark (crown in heart shape), Year mark for 1959 (F7), and Hämeenlinna city hallmark (three stylized towers), this vase is not only a functional flower holder but also a timeless art object that exemplifies the innovative design legacy of Tapio Wirkkala. Tapio Wirkkala, an iconic figure in modern Finnish design, has left an indelible mark on twentieth-century aesthetics with creations that extend far beyond furniture and glass to include sculpture and jewelry. Throughout his illustrious career, he received major accolades, including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, as well as the prestigious Pro Finland and Prince Eugen medals.
