About the Item

Vintage Vista Allegre set of 8 porcelain demitasse cups with 8 saucers was made for Charles Hall, Inc. and decorated in Olivia pattern. Olivia features emerald green flower decors with black outlines and gold rims. In this set the pattern was used on elegant Modernist blanks, made of semi-translucent bone china. Minimalistic silhouette of the pieces features an unusual saucer shape that adds visual interest and originality to the set. Later Vista Allegre reused Olivia pattern on different blanks/shapes for Mottahedeh, that are more common; however, this set dates to 1950s. The set was acquired preserved in the original box, with each piece in the original paper wrap, with distributor paper labels (Hall House New York, Portugal, and handwritten model numbers) still attached, and the gift card included. It does not appear to be used. The pieces are marked with VA Portugal stamps where the marks are visible; however, some of the pieces have the bottoms covered with paper labels, covering the backmarks. Charles Hall, Inc., 1020 Madison Avenue, NY, NY was an official importer and distributor for Vista Allegre in early 1950s; in 1951 they were listed in Red Book registry of Foreign Manufacturers and Trade Names on p.160. In early 1950s Charles Hall run a series of advertisements and large printed catalogues for Vista Allegre products. Vista Alegre is an iconic Portuguese porcelain and fine china producer, founded in 1824. Regular porcelain production between 1832 and 1840 led to significant improvements in the quality of porcelain and glass. In 1851, Vista Alegre participated in the Universal Exhibition at Crystal Palace, in London. In 1867, the company achieved international recognition at the Paris Universal Exhibition. In 1852, a complete dinner set was produced for the Royal House of Portugal. Beginning of 20th century was characterized by industrial development and business growth, accompanied by an artistic revival and adaptation of modern styles, such as Art Deco and Functionalism. Between late 1940s and 1970s the company increased exports and expanded its business to new markets. A tradition of producing exclusive pieces was started, of which a dinner set produced for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is a prime example. Collaboration with contemporary artists also became increasingly frequent. Vista Alegre pieces were displayed in relevant international exhibitions, at locations such as the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Royal Palace of Milan. In May 2001, a merger between the Vista Alegre Group and the Atlantis Group brought glassware and crystal back to the company and resulted in the largest tableware group in Portugal and the sixth largest group in the world within this sector, the Vista Alegre Group (VAA Group). Cups are 2.26"h, 2.3" d and 2.9" w Saucers are 4.2" in diameter and 0.98" high
