Antique Pair Blue and White Wedgwood Soup Tureens and 8 Dinner Plates Circa 1840

About the Item

This pair of Wedgwood soup tureens, along with a set of eight Wedgwood dinner pates, were made in England circa 1840. Both the soup tureens and the matching set of eight large dinner plates are decorated in Wedgwood's exceptional Mared pattern. The pattern features a loop of "pearls" encircling the center, complemented by a beautiful rippled blue shell design along the edges. The rippled surface adds visual interest as light plays across it (see images). Josiah Wedgwood supervised the creation of this pattern in the later half of the 18th century. Similar to our set, the original 18th-century Mared pattern was made of pearlware, also known as pearled creamware. Blue enamel was applied for decoration, and the pearlware was then glazed with a very light blue glaze to permanently seal the design. The glazing protects the decoration from scratches, flaking, and general wear, keeping it as fresh today as when it was first applied. Marks: The reverse of both the plates and the tureens shows the impressed "WEDGWOOD" mark of the period. Dimensions: The tureens are 12" across the handles x 8.5' tall x 7" wide, and the plates are 9.75" in diameter, Condition: Excellent Price: $4,800 Background of Pearlware: Pearlware was first created in the mid-18th century and first became popular around 1780. It is distinct from creamware due to its blue-tinged glaze, which is produced by using cobalt to whiten the creamware. Josiah Wedgwood developed and popularized pearlware to provide an alternative to Chinese porcelain, which is whiter than Wedgwood's creamware.
