Pair of Coalport English Imari Ice Pails Made in England circa 1800-1805

About the Item

WHY WE LOVE IT: Everyone loves ice cream! We are pleased to offer this altogether exquisite pair of Coalport ice pails. Beautifully hand painted with panels showing two different scenes. On one side, an orange pheasant with golden wings perches on green leaved lavender branches blooming with red and gold flowers. On the other side, another bird rests on similar branches but is facing a fantastic red and gold blossom that’s as big as he is. The scenes are separated by panels of deep cobalt blue containing swirling gold leaves and a flower medallion. The panels have beautifully curved outlines which give the feeling of graceful movement all the way around the pieces. The sides of the lids have smaller versions of the same paintings, but on the very top of each there is another scene - an adorable pagoda style cottage sits next to a stream and a lavender tree bearing red flowers and bunches of golden grapes. In all the paintings, the unexpected combination of lavender with the traditional Imari colors of iron red, orange, blue and green adds a wonderfully exotic element. The entire design on each piece is accented by rich gilding, which covers the scrolled handles and the twisted branches which join on each top to form the finial. The ice pails were made at the very beginning of the 19th century, 1800-1805. The form can be found on the cover of Michael Messenger's "Coalport 1795-1926". Dimensions: 11 inches tall x 8.5 inches diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $9500 Background of Ice Pails: Ice pails were also called fruit coolers, and were the 18th and 19th century equivalent of today's ice cream maker. Traditionally placed on the sideboard in the dining room, the bottom of the pail was filled with ice. The liner contained cream and occasionally cut fruit. Additional ice was placed on the high walled cover. At the end of the meal the Hostess would serve the frozen ice cream to her delighted guests.

This is a good quality coffee can that we attribute to the Coalport porcelain works, Shropshire, England, made during the John Rose period of the George 111rd years, circa 1805. The coffee can is nominally parallel, tapering slightly to the base, with a simple loop handle, with a slight lower kink and pointed attachments. It has a shallow foot recess with obtuse corner and is unmarked to the base. The pattern is beautifully hand painted in the French Chantilly style with cornflower sprigs in gold gilt and blue with red & green leaf detail to the lower half with an upper border continuous cornflower pattern, all between gold gilt rings with further gilt decoration to the outer handle and gilding around the lower rim. This is an extremely rare set of lidded sauce tureens made by Coalport in circa 1820. The tureens are decorated in the "Marquess of Anglesey" pattern. These sauce tureens would have formed part of a large dessert service. They were used for the sauce to be served on ice cream or a cooked sweet dish, and the lids have holes for the sauce ladles. Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th century, coming out with many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th century and brought out many iconic designs. The Welsh Nantgarw factory first created the heavily gilded service for the Marquess of Anglesey, with beautifully painted flowers.
