About the Item

This is a beautifully hand-painted English coffee can, from the late George III period, of the very early 19th century, circa 1805. This coffee can is nominally straight sided with a plain loop handle having pointed attachments. The pattern depicts a trailing vine with feathery leaves and grapes, all having superb detail, the vine branches being solid gilding, with further gilded detail to the leaves and the rim. The pattern is also painted to the upper half of the inside of the can. The identification of these unmarked coffee cans is difficult but we attribute this can to COALPORT, either John or Thomas Rose, mainly because of the handle shape, style and dimensions. Most of the manufacturers of this period copied other makers patterns and often made replacement pieces for their clients. The Minton factory produced a similar Coffee Can in this pattern which they numbered Pattern 85, and this pattern is also thought to have been produced by Sevres . This coffee can has no markings to the base. Overall a very beautiful English Coffee Can from the Georgian period.
