About the Item

A truly fantastic, large, heavy charger/plate/platter by American master potter/artist Peter Voulkos who is known for his abstract expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. Very unique and quite scarce (apparently Voulkos made only a small, limited number of plates during this period. It is quite possible that this work could be one of a series of approximately eighteen plates Voulkos made in 1987 at his Dome Studio in Oakland) "pushed/passed through" gas-fired work in stoneware featuring a smoky grey coloring with porcelain pass-throughs, partial cobalt oxide slip/engobe, and clear glaze. Signed and dated (1987) on verso/ base by Voulkos. Provenance: From a Private Collection. The previous owner was a prominent art appraiser and close associate of Voulkos. Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramist of the modern era. He won the Rodin Museum Prize at the first Paris Biennale in 1959 and was the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984. Voulkos received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also received six honorary doctorate degrees as well as three National Endowment for the Arts awards. His work can be found in many prominent collections and museums including: Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, Nagoya, Japan Albany Mall, Albany, New York American Museum of Ceramic Arts, Pomona, California The Anderson Collection at Stanford University, Stanford, California Archie Bray Foundation, Helena, Montana Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, Arkansas Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada The Art Gallery, Paul Creative Arts Center, University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth, Australia Australian National Gallery, Canberra, Australia Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland Banff Centre, School of Fine Arts, Alberta, Canada Boise Art Museum, Boise, Idaho Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Philadephia Cincinnati Art Museum, Cinncinati, Ohio City and County of San Francisco, San Francisco, California City of Fresno, Fresno, California City of Highland Park, Illinois Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, State Fair Community College, Sedalia, Missouri David & Alfred Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois Den Permanente, Copenhagen, Denmark Denver Art Museum, Denver, Colorado Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines, Iowa Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan Elvehjem Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, M.
