Group of 17 Antique 19th & 20th Century Folk Art Sewing Needle / Pin Cushions

About the Item

An incredible collection of 17 Folk Art pin cushions. The group comprising pansy flowers, strawberries, boots, mittens, a rolled cushion, 2 books, a pear form, a bell form, a carrot, and a heart. In varying materials including silks, wools, and cottons. The carrot is the newest, made from an early synthetic fiber. Some are filled with cotton batting, some with sand or sawdust. From the personal collection of a long-standing, well-regarded Virginia antiques dealer. Simply a wonderful grouping! Date: 20th Century and earlier Overall Condition: They are in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: All, but the largest strawberry, have varying degrees of discoloration, either from stains, use, or sun bleaching, all as expected for their age. Any ribbons or exposed thread ends have an expected amount of slight fraying. All of this wear is expected wear consistent with their age. The smaller strawberries have some losses to the outer silk layer at the points, along the seams, and at the outer edges of the embroidery. The medium strawberry has some losses to the wool embroidery at the top. The are losses to the pile of the blue velvet on the pansies, as well as thinning to the yellow silk at the high points and along the seams, resulting in a few small spots where it has frayed away from the edge. The outer silk on both boots have spots of loss mostly at the raised points and along the seams. The smaller boot has losses to the weft of the silk throughout resulting in small patches with a brighter satin appearance. The larger boot is missing one of its long laces and tassel. The rolled cushion shows signs of previous embroidery that was remove long ago. The bell and books have a few small holes (possibly from moths), mostly on the sides. They all have spots of fraying to the outer fabric, especially along the seams. The larger book seems to have once had a button closure. The wool flap on the smaller book's interior has an area of major loss. Measurements: Smaller book: Width: ca. 2 5/8 in. Height: ca. 1 1/4 in. Depth: ca. 2 in. Larger book: Width: ca. 2 7/8 in.
