Large Antique Americana Gilt and Forest Green Painted Plaster Spread Wing Eagle
About the Item
19th c., Americana, a large scale gilt and forest green painted cast plaster eagle, depicted spread-wing, with crisply detailed overlapping feathers. With mounting bracket on reverse. This is a very handsome example of an iconic form. The combination of the gilt and forest green paint is striking.
Depictions of eagles can be seen across American art. The national bird of the United States, the eagle has been used as a symbol of American freedom for centuries. This is a fine example in the style of John Haley Bellamy. Bellamy produced highly stylized carved wooden eagles, primarily designed for the fronts of ships and homes. Bellamy’s iconic style of carving eagles became so well known that they soon were labeled the “Bellamy Eagle,” and they have been mimicked by artists to this day. His eagles were highly prized for their quality and his attention to detail in crafting them. Bellamy’s eagles were carved in a stylistic manner, to show individual feathers but also evoke a sense of mass and movement in the wings.

View All20th Century - Whimsical Pair of Large Carved and Painted Wood Flamingos
Located in Morristown, NJ
Late 20th c., a pair of vibrantly painted wooden flamingo floor sculptures, each with a fish in mouth. One is signed "MW" on the underside. Painted in pink and lilac respectively and both with painted details to resemble feathers. Each flamingo is holding a fish in its beak. Both fish have been painted in contrasting colors to those of the flamingos. The gold painted beaks and legs add an additional element of whimsy to these carved sculptures.
They are life size and will be sure to draw attention and likely a smile. They would look great on the deck of a seaside home, as a welcoming pair by a front door, in a child's bedroom or even as a bathroom accent.
Please Note: To reduce the cost of shipping, each will be professionally packed by a specialist service in advance of UPS shipping. This is significantly less expensive than white glove shipping.

Two Antique Niger Bura Peoples Fired Clay Heads on Stands
Located in Morristown, NJ
Bura fired clay heads, possibly 3rd-10th c. CE, Niger, Bura peoples. These are very expressive examples on custom mounts, the larger with manganese deposits.
Between the 3rd and 10th centuries, the dead were laid to rest at a site in present-day Niger downstream from the Inland Niger delta. The burial ground’s density and expanse suggest a veritable city of the departed. Several hundred individual graves were marked by upturned pottery urns, some of which were cylinders topped by figurative imagery. The most elaborate of these were full-bodied equestrians, while the most basic were highly abstract, independent heads.
Note: These figures will be professionally packed by a specialist shipper at the sellers expense.

Large Antique Wooden Carved Black Forest Baroque Stag Head with 10 Point Trophy
Located in Berghuelen, DE
Large Antique Wooden Carved Black Forest Baroque stag head with 10 Point Trophy
A large antique Black Forest baroque stag head. Carved in typical abstract style of the early 18th century. It is mounted on a wooden carved and painted plaque with emblem and foliages and features a large real stag antler trophy. The head still has its original polycrome painted finish witch is partly restored. The left side of the plaque has been replaced. A great individual piece which enhances every wall decoration.
A special way to present hunting trophies is to attach them to carved animal heads. This tradition exists since the Middle Ages. Even after intensive investigations, it is not yet possible to explain exactly how this happened. The carved heads are often colored and mounted on cartouches that are also carved and painted. They follow a naturalistic representation and one could think that in this way they are symbolically brought back from the abstraction of dead antlers into liveliness. Famous artists to be named are Madl in Ichenhausen, Germany and Heissl in Ebensee, Austria. Around 1900, the antler collection...
