Early 20th century English Hand Painted “HELL” Sign

About the Item

Early 20th century English Hand Painted “HELL” Sign Originally this sign was reclaimed from a shoe shop named “Shellington Shoes” in Essex. Most of the sign was damaged but we lucky saved only these 4-letters stating “HELL”. Hand painted with gold gilt writing and mounted flat onto a new ebonised bespoke frame with hanging hooks. This solid pine wood sign is single sided and shows lots of natural age and wear. It’s said that “if you believe in heaven, then you have to believe in HELL”. Size in inches: H 16” x W 57” x D 1” Origin: English Date: Early 20th Century Condition: Aged The frame this sign is mounted in is new, it supports the sign perfectly without movement. The sign itself shows damage and loss in the form of repair to sections of the H letter and a split that runs across the bottom section of the letters as shown. There is loss to the painted surface with various marks across the bottom sections of the letter L. Holes are also present in some letter where originally this sign would have been supported by nails of sorts to the outside of the shop front. The sign is very solid and in one piece, brass hanging hooks are supplied but the chains are not part of this sale.
