About the Item

This enchanting chandelier was designed by Emil Stejnar in the 1950s for the Viennese lighting manufacturer Rupert Nikoll. Stejnar's ceiling lamps are characterized by star shapes and delicate glass lacquer. This specimen, the Sputnik lamp, is probably one of the most famous, often referred to, to great confusion, as a dandelion or snowball. The Sputnik is and remains probably one of the most celebrated (and most often copied) ceiling lamps of the 20th century. It is easily recognized because of its bright glass flowers that cast vivid shadows on the walls. The lamp inspired a whole generation of Space Age designers and led to futuristic designs on their part. The detailed glass finish reminds us of both Steinar's dedication to the magic of the cosmos and the lighting of the Space Age era.   The chandelier has a total of 17 E14 sockets. The body is made of brass, the outgoing brass rods are lacquered and mostly decorated with diamond-shaped glass spheres and elaborately crafted glass flowers. Manufactured in Germany in the 1970s. Designer Emil Stejnar is known for his Space Age era lighting designs. But for Stejnar himself, his design career was second only to his passion for magical and mystical phenomena. Stejnar was born in Vienna in 1939 and trained as a silver and goldsmith. Already at a very young age he showed interest in astrology and the occult. At the age of 18 he moved to Sweden to pursue his interest. In 1968 the married Stejnar moved back to Vienna and ran a jewelry store during the day. Besides working in his store, he was director of the Institute for Scientific Life Research for 20 years. Stejner was convinced that the combination of Freemasonry and Astrology connects the material world with the spiritual world. His hermetic beliefs were widely published and as a result Stejnar became very well known in the esoteric field.

Small J.T. Kalmar 'Ice Glass' Chandelier, 1960s with One Lamp Socket
By J.T. Kalmar
Located in Hamburg, DE
Small J.T. Kalmar 'Ice Glass' chandelier, 1960s with one lamp socket This chandelier from the 1960s by the Austrian designer J.T. Kalmar apparently more than deserves the name ice glass. The glass icicles lined up together form the lampshade of the chandelier and look amazingly similar to a real ice sculpture. When switched on and flooded with light, the ice glass casts beautiful shadow patterns on the surrounding walls and creates a cosy warmth in the room despite the icy sight. J.T. Kalmar lived and worked in Austria and gained extensive design experience at an early age in his father's company, which specialized in candlesticks and other objects cast in bronze and which Kalmar later took over himself. In the course of his career Kalmar designed lighting for many renowned architects as well as for important institutions such as the Vienna Opera...
