About the Item

Paavo Tynell for Idman, grand chandelier, lacquered steel, opal glass, brass, Finland, 1963 This substantial chandelier, measuring 155 cm/61.02 in. in width, is designed by the acclaimed Finnish design master Paavo Tynell, showcasing a clear study in balance and symmetry through a clear architectural rhythm. Eight opal glass shades rise like quiet columns from a white lacquered steel beam, their cylindrical shape repeating evenly along the horizontal axis. Each shade is held by a gently curved brass arm, softening the transition from vertical to horizontal, and giving the overall design a sense of levitation despite its solid materials. The double suspension rods extend vertically with restraint, not distracting from the sculptural harmony below. The form is both strict and soft; modernist in its clarity, but softened by the warm glow of the opal glass and the subtle curvature of the brass arms. There is an almost musical sense of pacing in the composition: measured, calm, and intentional. Finnish designer Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) began his career as a blacksmith. After studying to become a master craftsman at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, he founded his own manufacturing company named Taito Oy. During his career, he collaborated with fellow Finnish designers and architects such as Alvar Aalto. Their collaboration proved to be very fruitful and achieved Tynell’s reputation of “the man who illuminated Finland.” Tynell’s international design influence grew thanks to the Finland House located in New York and allowed him to see himself trusted with prestigious orders both for public buildings such as the UN but also for important private collections. Based on existing models, custom versions were ordered by the Finnish upper-class. Tynell's designs are characterized by organic forms and the use of perforated brass in combination with unusual materials for lighting such as straw and cane.
