Rare floor lamp by Pietro Chiesa, Fontana Arte, ca. 1940

About the Item

Floor lamp model "Saturn" Brass base / glass: construction brass, aluminium, satined glass Reflector rotatable in all positions Dimensions / h. 180cm diam. 57cm Fontana Arte around 1940 The Art Deco designer Pietro Chiesa was born in Milan in 1892 into a family of artists from Ticino in Switzerland. After studying at the Accademia de Belle Arti di Brera and training in the studio of furniture designer Giovan Battista Giannotti (both in Milan), Chiesa opened his own studio, Bottega di Pietro Chiesa, in 1921. Best known for his glassware, Chiesa exhibited his work for the first time at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. In 1933, Bottega di Pietro merged with Fontana Arte, an Italian manufacturer of furniture, glass and lighting, founded in 1932 by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana. Chiesa became the company's artistic director and designed numerous objects for Fontana Arte, including lamps, stained glass windows, tables and objets d'art. Notable pieces include the Fontana table (1932), made from a single piece of curved, clear glass, the Cartoccio vase (1932) and the lacquered copper Luminator floor lamp (1933). Chiesa died in Paris in 1948.
