Red Wall Lamp Model 2601 by Gaetano Sciolari for Stilnovo, Italy 1950s

About the Item

Gaetano Sciolari was an influential Italian designer known for his forward-thinking lighting creations, particularly in the mid-20th century. Stilnovo, founded in 1946, was a leading force in lighting design, partnering with innovators like Sciolari to produce modern, functional pieces that played a crucial role in shaping the direction of Italian design. Design This wall light from 1950 is a prime example of Sciolari’s ability to merge function and aesthetics. The lamp with model 2601 features a brass arm that is adjustable, allowing users to modify the positioning of the lamp depending on the need. The arm is mounted on the wall using a simple yet effective suspension system, also crafted from brass, which has aged over time, developing a characteristic patina. This worn surface not only highlights the lamp's history but also adds character and depth to the piece. Hanging from the arm is a counterweight that helps stabilize the lamp and features a built-in light switch for ease of use. The lamp itself consists of a conical opaline glass body, creating a soft and diffused light when illuminated. Surrounding the glass is a cylindrical red shade, giving the lamp a bold, striking appearance. The interior of the shade bears the Stilnovo label. Three slender brass bars delicately connect the red shade to the opaline glass, reinforcing the minimalist yet sturdy design of the piece. In summary, this wall light beautifully encapsulates Sciolari's vision of creating pieces that are both functional and visually engaging. The patina from years of use gives it added appeal, and the careful combination of materials highlights why Sciolari and Stilnovo remain key figures in mid-century Italian lighting design. This lamp has an E27 lamp socket and the bar or rod can be extended with forty centimeters. Condition The condition is good with signs of age and usage such as small marks on the shade and some discolorations. The cord can be replaced by for instance a fabric round cord that fits neatly into the pulleys attached to the suspension system.
