This stunning antique French mirror, crafted around 1850 in the Alsace region, is a remarkable example of the Louis Philippe style. The mirror is richly decorated and showcases exquisite craftsmanship, featuring an impressive crest and detailed ornaments on the lower corners of the frame. The embellishments include classic motifs such as scrolls, leaves, and acanthus, giving the mirror an elegant and refined appearance. A delicate pearl beading runs along the glass, adding an extra touch of sophistication.
The Louis Philippe style, named after King Louis Philippe I, is characterized by elegant yet understated forms with a sense of grandeur. Unlike the more opulent and theatrical designs of earlier styles, such as Baroque and Rococo, Louis Philippe pieces exude a refined simplicity. This is reflected in the smooth, rounded corners and symmetrical ornamentation, which are beautifully evident in this mirror.
What makes this mirror particularly special is the unique gilding technique typical of the Alsace region. Part of the frame was gilded with silver leaf and then finished with a patina of yellow ochre. This process creates a subtle variation in tones, where the pale gold of the silver leaf contrasts beautifully with the warmer gold leaf. This delicate interplay of gold hues enhances the depth and definition of the frame, making the intricate details stand out even more.
The mirror retains its original, beveled glass with an authentic silver nitrate backing. The glass shows subtle signs of aging, which complement the antique character of the frame. It remains in exceptional, original condition, with a deep, rich color and no damage.
In our workshop, we carefully but gently cleaned the mirror without any restoration. The natural patina and beautiful aging, developed over more than 175 years, have been fully preserved. These authentic signs of age add to the mirror’s unique character and enhance its antique charm. This remarkable piece exudes a timeless beauty, with a rich, storied patina that only the passage of time can create.
