About the Item
Tomes, Robert and John Laird Wilson. The Battles of America by Sea and Land. New York: Patterson & Neilson, 1878. Thick quarto three volume set. Original full leather boards, embossed decorative border and titles to the front, with raised bands, gilt tooling and titles to the spine, edges gilt. Engraved plates throughout. Presented with new custom archival slipcases.
Presented is an early edition of Robert Tomes and John Laird Wilson’s The Battles of America by Sea and Land. This ambitious three volume work explores American conflicts from the Colonial and Revolutionary eras (Volume 1), the War of 1812 and the Mexican Campaigns (Volume II), and the Civil War (Volume III). It also includes biographies of important naval and military commanders who shaped the conflicts, and ultimately the outcome, of our Nation.
The Battles of America was first published in book form from subscribers’ parts in 1861. This edition, published by Patterson & Neilson in 1878, includes Robert Laird Wilson’s work on the Civil War as the third volume. This three volume series was also published concurrently in 1878 by James Virtue in New York. The third volume by Wilson was also later published as The Pictorial History of the Great Civil War in 1881.
The three volume set is illustrated with engraved frontispieces and many full-page engraved plates of naval and military scenes, maps, and portraits of commanders. Several of the engravings were from original designs by prominent 19th century artists like F.O.C. Darley and Alonzo Chappel.
