8vo, 9 5 7/8 inches (226 x 145 mm); xvi, introduction cvi, 158 pp. on hand-made laid paper; bound in 3/4 navy morocco with gold fillets, gilt title and leaf decorations in compartments on spine, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., rest uncut; spine tail, hinges and corners a little worn; pages bright and unmarked, binding square.

A collection of poetry by the fifteenth-century French poet, François Villon (c. 1431 – 1463). Villon was involved in criminal behavior during his life and his encounters with law enforcement feature throughout his poetry. With a detailed biographical and critical introduction by the English poet and translator, John Payne (1842 – 1916), best known for his translations of Boccaccio's 'Decameron', 'The Arabian Nights' and the 'Diwan Hafez'.
