Early Woodcut Bird's Eye View of Rouffach, France, by Sebastian Münster, 1554

About the Item

Early Woodcut Bird's Eye View of Rouffach, France, by Sebastian Münster, 1554 Description: This rare 1554 woodcut is a bird's eye view of Rouffach, a town in the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est region in north-eastern France, known for its rich history and famous cherry brandy (kirsch). The illustration shows the town with its fortifications, prominent buildings, and surrounding fields, capturing the detailed medieval topography of Rouffach. It is part of Sebastian Münster's *Cosmographia*, one of the most influential works of the Renaissance that spread geographical knowledge throughout Europe. Münster was a Renaissance polymath, well known for his editions of Ptolemy's *Geographia* and his own *Cosmographia*. The woodcut was printed by Heinrich Petri, his stepson, ensuring Münster’s impactful geographical and historical work was shared well beyond his time. This piece remains a testament to Münster's influence in the development of European cartography and historical documentation.
