About the Item

Greece Map – Kingdom of Greece and Ionian Islands 1847 This elegant antique print shows the Kingdom of Greece titled “Königreich Griechenland und die Ionischen Inseln” meaning “Kingdom of Greece and the Ionian Islands.” Published in 1847 by Justus Perthes in Gotha as part of Adolf Stieler’s esteemed Hand-Atlas, this map was engraved under the direction of F. v. Stülpnagel. It depicts mainland Greece, the Peloponnese, and the Ionian Islands in detailed clarity, with towns, mountains, rivers, and islands precisely labelled. Notable features include major cities such as Athens, Patras, Corinth, and Missolonghi, as well as detailed representations of the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands. The Ionian Islands, including Corfu (Kerkyra), Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and Lefkada, are shown with their administrative divisions. Inset maps include: – Plan of Athens and Piraeus with key sites labelled – Regional plans highlighting surrounding areas and strategic locations This map is significant as it captures Greece shortly after its independence from the Ottoman Empire (1830), depicting the young kingdom as it emerged in European politics. The Ionian Islands were under British protection at this time, shown with their distinct administrative status before their unification with Greece in 1864. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand colouring to highlight political and territorial boundaries in soft hues. German titles and detailed annotations are engraved with precision, demonstrating Stieler’s renowned cartographic clarity. Condition summary: Excellent condition with minimal toning, strong impression, and no tears or repairs. Colours remain vivid, and paper is firm and stable throughout. Framing tips: This detailed map of Greece will look striking in a dark wood or black frame to emphasise its classical and historical significance. Pair with a wide cream or ivory mount to balance its composition and highlight the intricate engraving. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve fine lines and original colours for long-term enjoyment.

Located in Langweer, NL
The map titled "GRAECIA, EPIRUS post bella Persica," translates to "Greece and Epirus after the Persian Wars." It covers the regions of ancient Greece and Epirus following the Greco-Persian Wars, a series of conflicts between the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire during the 5th century BC. What makes this map interesting: 1. **Historical Context**: The period after the Persian Wars was pivotal for ancient Greece, leading to the rise of Athens as a major power and the Golden Age of Athens. 2. **Inset Maps**: Detailed insets, such as the one showing the Acropolis of Athens, provide close-up views of historically significant locations. 3. **Topography**: It features the diverse terrain of Greece, from the rugged mountain ranges to the intricate coastlines and islands, influencing the development of Greek city-states. 4. **City-States**: The map likely details the various polis or city-states, such as Athens, Sparta, Thebes, and others, which played critical roles in the Persian Wars. 5. **Battle Sites**: It might mark important battle sites from the wars, like Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. 6. **Latin Labels**: The use of Latin for place names and descriptions adds to the map's scholarly quality. 7. **Cultural Landmarks**: The map may include locations of significant cultural and historical landmarks from the era, such as temples, theatres, and agoras. This map is from the "Spruner-Menke Atlas Antiquus," compiled by Karl Spruner von Merz and edited by Theodorus Menke. The atlas, known for its detailed maps of historical and ancient geographies, was a significant educational tool in the 19th century. The Greco-Persian Wars, which included famous battles such as Marathon and Salamis, were crucial for the preservation of Greek independence...
