Wonderfully detailed, intricate and excellent condition, 19th century box. Over the years we have sold a number of rare and unique boxes, but never a Gothic Revival one as intricate and beautifully shaped as this specimen here. Anyone who knows what it took (in terms of time and skills) to create this box will be just as much in awe as we were when we first saw it. It would have taken several artisans to, first, design this piece on paper, then have the sculptures made in wood or clay, then have molds made, then cast them in bronze, then have the castings polished, then have all the individual pieces somehow welded together, then have the exterior gilt, the interior silky lined, the roof hinged, the lock and handles put perfectly in place etc. Also, this antique box is so rare, it will be difficult to ever find out what exactly it was used for, where it was made and whom it was made for. However, in the mid-19th century only churches and the very rich could afford such a top-quality, luxurious and worldly item. It is covered in Gothic details, it tells many a story in relief, it hinges perfectly, it comes with the original and perfect working lock and Gothic key and it even stands on the most amazing snail feet. It all has meaning and anyone interested in the Gothic Style will be able to find out all about the hidden meaning.
