Exceptional and unique, 3 feet tall, Gothic Revival wall barometer, circa 1890.
This unique antique from the second half of the 19th century, in our view, is the dream of anyone with a Gothic (inspired) interior. This design could not be more Gothic and to have found a barometer of this size and with this many Gothic details, again, felt like a blessing. And even though we had to pay-up to be able to acquire it, when you find an antique that is this rare and good then you should always try to buy it. This monumental and solid nutwood antique barometer is entirely hand carved and, as you can see in our photos, the workmanship is second to none. This work of Gothic wall art is perfectly symmetrical and we love the fact that only the large church pilars are carved in a different pattern. This rare design feature, to us, shows the creative nature of its designer. We also love the many Gothic church spires on top and the way this entire 'composition' is superbly balanced. There also is small 'ledge' underneath the barometer and thermometer, possibly for displaying some small sculptures. The only downside would be that the inside of the barometer/thermometer is not squeaky clean. Maybe it is easy to open the front of the barometer, but we have no experience with that. Have you also noticed the amazingly detailed Gothic leafs at the top of both the large pilars? They too display the amazing workmanship of a seasoned craftsman. Besides the enormous height and width, what also makes this rare barometer truly impressive is its depth, because this almost gives you the idea of looking at a magnificent barometer through 3D glasses. The trapezoidal form of the casework is in keeping with the Gothic style, which historians concur originated in the Cathedral of St. Denis during the middle of the 12th century. Boldly molded crown follows the complex contours and overlooks the case below which features a single door flanked by cornerposts that feature pilasters facing front as well as the sides, with recessed arched panels topped with recessed circular frames above filled with carved rosettes highlighted in gold. Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel. In addition to classical, often church-like caskets, anthropomorphic, so-called "speaking" reliquaries were also made, which already inform the viewer about their contents through their own design. Mostly they were made of precious metals and decorated with rich sculptural ornaments or precious stones. One of the most famous examples of reliquaries is the Epiphany shrine of Nicholas of Verdun from the late 12th or early 13th century in Cologne Cathedral.
The reliquary offered here has an architectural structure with a rectangular ground plan. The three-sided glazed box with a dormer roof rests on a plinth.

Good original antique condition. Presents well. Strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound. Nicely aged mellow warm patina. Wear consistent with age and indicative of use, including scattered losses to the paint, old repairs and touchups throughout, and various other antique character marks that add to the overall display, authenticity, and rustic old world charm.

A magnificent rustic Spanish Colonial antique, circa 1725, church altar with remarkable patina and detailing.
Hand-crafted in the first half of the 18th century, most likely commissioned by the Spanish Empire for use in a Colonial religious Mission, now fashioned with later antique elements and repurposed for use as a sideboard.
The scarce Baroque period ecclesiastical architectural church altar presents with a raised gallery shelf back topped with a single board, over a massive, thick pine plank wooden slab top, featuring impressive rich patina, rustic charm and antique character. Mounted over the distinctive architectural trapezoid shaped molded base with rich hand carved and polychrome painted decoration, including the sophisticated original Italian / European inspired trompe-l'œil marbleizing finish, which was a variety of faux painting techniques used only by highly skilled artisans to create the distinctive and varied patterns of marble, in an effort to reproduce the colors, veining and luster of real marble or other building materials. Rising on solid supports enhanced with recessed paneling, smooth rounded corners and edge work and stepped molded trim.
Beautiful, nicely aged patina over the whole, highly desirable heavily worn, naturally distressed, chippy paint craquelure finish that has been stabilized to minimize further loss, that does not detect from the aesthetics or functionality, but only adds to the overall elegant warmth and rich historical depth, that can only be acquired over three centuries. Very strong, sturdy, stable. Delivered cleaned, hand waxed, luminous polished French patina finish, ready for immediate use, and many more years of generational enjoyment.

Crucifix on Calvary, called 'Pestis Christi' or Crucifiix Pestis 'Plague of Christ' or Plague Crucifix). The sculpture is composite, made with heterogeneous materials: wax, wood, papier-mâché. The octagonal base is slightly raised and supports the calvary, symbolized by rocks, from which the crucifix rises, made with intentionally unfinished boards and with marked veins. The depicted Christ is peculiar: he shows scarified skin all over his body. Masterfully crafted in wax. They are the plagues of the plague that Christ, 'Agnus Dei' takes charge of with salvific value, for the salvation of the world. At his feet the ordeal full of symbols: evil (snake) with the apple, the 'Memento mori' of human bones...

A scarce Baroque Period Spanish altarpiece retablo / reredo, by (attributed) Luis Salvador Carmona (1708-1767), depicting thorn crowned Christ crucified / Cristo crucificado hand carved, polychromed wood with forged iron nails, mounted on later plaque.
This rare antique religious work / object of art, circa 1750, most likely commissioned by the Catholic Church of Spain, destined to be prominently displayed as an altarpiece / retablo or as part of a much larger reredo, directly behind the main altar at a Spanish or Continental European Catholic Church (French, Italian, Iberian, Portuguese)
The Crucified Christ, displayed mounted on a later faded red fabric upholstered shaped backboard plaque with textured gilt border. The exceptional hand sculpted, carved, gessoed, polychrome painted figure depicting bloodied Jesus, with crown of thorns atop his head, only wearing a undulating shaped cloth around his loin, arms extended and feet crossed, spear head form iron nails through both. The verso covered in an old paper printed backing with metal hook hardware at top for wall hanging.
