Period Renaissance Early 16th Century Processional Cross, France

Exceptional Period Renaissance processional cross early 16th century, France Extremely rare and beautiful processional cross from the early period of the French Renaissance. This crucifix is handcrafted, circa 1530, in bronze and silver overlay. The corpus of Christ and the medallions, including the titillus, “INRI” and the base knot are fire gilded bronze. Over the course of about five centuries some of the applications to the backside of the cross, which should consist of the figure of the Virgin and some more medallions, are missing. This historical treasure will be the crown piece of any ecclesiastical collection. Considering the age and heavy use, the cross is in remarkably good condition. The applications to the back of the cross are missing. Measures: 23" H x 16" W x 4.5" D Weight: 4 lbs 8oz.

This rare 17th century panel, carved in high relief, is museum quality and without doubt the work of an important Flemish master carver. It represents the biblical scene of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem for the census. Multiple figures surround the center in a well balanced setting. Rich, deep color and great patina, which developed over about 400 years, make this piece of art exceptional. The panel is mounted on a later dusty rose velvet backing. Condition: Small part of backdrop on right is missing. Joseph’s left hand is missing.
