Solheim Cup Matches U.S. Team Signed Pin Flag, USA 13 vs. EUROPE 15, Circa 2011

About the Item

Presented is an autographed collage celebrating the women golfers of the 2011 Solheim Cup U.S. team. The 12th Solheim Cup Matches were held September 23-25 in Ireland at Killeen Castle, just northwest of Dublin. The biennial matches are a three-day contest for professional female golfers pitting the 12 best players born in the United States against the 12 best players of European nationality. This is a beautifully framed 2011 Solheim Cup piece, featuring the commemorative pin flag signed by the entire U.S. team and captains, to include: Christina Kim, Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer, Juli Inkster, Brittany Lincicome, Cristie Kerr, Ryann O’Toole, Morgan Pressel, Rosie Jones, Sherri Steinhauser, Brittany Lang, Vicky Hurst, Stacey Lewis, and Michelle Wie. Entering the 2011 Cup, the U.S. team had won the three recent competitions, with Europe's last victory coming eight years earlier in 2003. After the first two days of team play, the competition was tied at 8 points each. Europe went 7–5 in singles on Sunday and regained the Cup, with a final score of 15–13. It was Europe's fourth win. CONDITION: White pin flag, printed with light grey swirling flourishes. The Solheim Cup logo, match year, and location are printed at center. Three brass grommets on the white hoist. Flag is signed by U.S. team members in various felt-tip ink pens, with black, blue, and red ink. Signatures are legible and have not bled or faded over time. Flag is archivally presented mounted floating in a custom-built wood and gold frame, on tan mat, with a U.S. team photograph at Killeen Castle mounted above it. Framed Dimensions: 38 ½”H x 29” W x 2 ½” D.

Harvard Radios vs. Princeton Aviators Vintage Football Poster, circa 1918
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is a very scarce WWI Work Relief Fund poster featuring the Harvard Radios competing against the Princeton Aviators. The game, held on November 23, 1918, was a benefit football game to raise money for the war effort. The poster dynamically depicts two football players mid-action. Below, the names of the teams are printed in yellow, with the date, location of the game, and ticket information printed in contrasting white. The United War Work Campaign’s logo is printed at bottom center. The logo is composed of a black star and the number 7, with the text “United War Work Campaign” encircling the star in a yellow ring. The poster was illustrated by the artist J. Liello. His signature is printed in stone, visible on the left side of the composition. The following was written about the match in the November 23, 1918 issue of The New York Times: “Today marks the climax of the most irregular football season the gridiron sport has ever known… Here in New York there will be an unusually attractive football bill. First of all the war fund benefit at the Polo Grounds...

13 Star American Parade Flag with Rare Design, circa 1888 Ex Richard Pierce
Located in York County, PA
13 Star American parade flag in an extremely rare design, with “protection to home industries” slogan on a fanciful, scrolling streamer, made for the 1888 presidential campaign of Benjamin Harrison; formerly in the collection of Richard pierce. 1888 Benjamin Harrison campaign flag, printed on cotton, with 13 large stars in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern, upon which a whimsical, scrolling streamer is superimposed that features the slogan: “Protection to Home Industries.” There are numerous styles of both documented and undocumented, red, white, and blue bandanas and handkerchiefs, made for Harrison’s campaign in this year, as well as from the subsequent one, in 1892. Most bear variations of text to support the “Protection for American Industries” platform of the Republican Party. America was in the midst of the industrial age and there was a great deal of public interest, both in protecting growth and discouraging both imported goods and immigration. The constant stream of immigrants posed great challenges for a working families, competing for scarce jobs, in work environments that were already often far from ideal. In post-Civil War America, many of the working men were Civil War veterans. Bandanas abound from Harrison’s Campaigns, but flags do not. This example, along with three others, were once part of an 1888 patriotic quilt that was disassembled by a dealer and sold piecemeal to collectors. I eventually acquired all four. Fifteen to twenty years ago, these were the only four known copies. A couple of others have since surfaced, but the total count known still stands closer to 5 than 10. The use of 13 stars is seen in the flags of various candidates in the 19th century. Among these are Abraham Lincoln (1860 campaign), Henry Clay (1844 campaign), John Fremont (1856), and Benjamin Harrison’s grandfather, William Henry Harrison...
