Vintage Union Jack, Circa 1950s

About the Item

This is a beautiful Union Jack parade flag, dating from the early 1950s, during the early years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. The flag is printed on cotton, with machine-sewn hemmed top and bottom. The flag has a hand-sewn envelope hoist and is stamped “BRITISH MADE” in the bottom of the fly end. This flag is a combination of the flags of three distinct nations- England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The Union Jack postdates the Act of Union of 1801, in which the Kingdoms of Ireland and Great Britain joined to form the United Kingdom. The Union Jack is a combination of three separate flags. The base is St. George’s Cross, the flag of England. Since the 13th century, English soldiers had used the Cross of St. George, which is a red cross on white field. King Edward III made St. George the Patron saint of England in 1350, and the flag was used until 1606. When King James VI of Scotland became King of England it was decided that a new flag should represent the union of the two realms under one king. This new Union Flag was a combination of St. George’s Cross and the white Cross of St. Andrew on blue field, Scotland’s flag. This new “Union Flag” was used exclusively at sea, until 1707 when the two kingdoms were officially united. The Union flag flew as the flag of Great Britain, until the union of Ireland and Great Britain in 1801. The addition of Ireland to the flag is represented with a red saltire, to symbolize the Cross of St. Patrick. The name "Union Jack" became official when it was approved in Parliament in 1908. It was stated by the Earl of Crew, on July 14th: “My Lords, the noble Earl [Howe] asks me, with a view to removing any possible doubt that may exist on the subject, whether it is a fact that the full Union Jack may be flown on land by every citizen in the Empire. As many of us know, there has existed in the public mind a Curious confusion as to what flags may be flown and what may not. At one time it seemed to be believed that the Royal Standard could be flown anywhere and by anybody. That, however, as we now know, is not the case. It was formally announced that the Royal Standard is the personal flag of the Sovereign, and cannot properly be flown without His Majesty's permission, which is only granted when either the King or Queen is present. But, of course, a very different state of things applies to the Union Jack. I think it may fairly be stated, in reply to the noble Earl, that the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag, and it undoubtedly may be flown on land by all His Majesty's subjects.” CONDITION: Very good condition. The flag has a cotton construction. It is fully printed, with sewn edges. Red, blue, and white printed color remains very vibrant, some toning to white. Hemmed top and bottom with blue thread, machine-sewn. Hand-sewn envelope hoist, in white, blue, and red alternating thread colors. Stamped “BRITISH MADE” in the bottom fly end. Flag Dimensions: 17 3/4" H x 33" W. Flag is presented archivally mounted in a custom wooden frame, with linen mats, UV Plexiglas, and a custom plaque. • US Air Corps in Australia Vintage Military Pennant, circa WWII
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a souvenir felt pennant celebrating the servicemen and women of the U.S. Air Corps who were based in Australia and fought alongside members of the Royal Australian Air Force during WWII. The navy pennant features a printed red outline of the Australian continent with the U.S. Air Corps “wings” superimposed on it. Below, the text reads, “Souvenir of U.S. Air Corps in Australia.” At the very bottom of the pennant is the U.S. Air Corps symbol. Framed according to archival standards, this pennant symbolizes the collaborative partnership between the United States and Australia during the height of the Second World War in the Pacific Theater. Following the swift Japanese conquest of the Philippines and East Indies in late 1941, the remaining servicemen of the United States Army Air Force in the Pacific eventually relocated to Australia, to join other US and Australian units, including the Fifth Air Force, and regroup. The Fifth Air Force was placed under the command of Major General George Kenney in July of 1942. Their new goal was to seize air superiority over New Guinea and gain back air coverage over the Solomon Sea. General Kenney worked with U.S. Army General MacArthur...

  • Cast Iron Boot Jack Made for 1864 Presidential Campaign of George McClellan
    Located in York County, PA
CAST IRON BOOT JACK, MADE FOR THE 1864 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN OF GENERAL GEORGE B. MC CLELLAN, WITH A FANTASTIC SLOGAN THAT READS "THE UNION AT ALL HAZZARDS" Made for the 1864 presidential run of George B. McClellan, this cast iron bootjack is both rare and graphically exceptional. Displaying the original black-painted surface, with attractive and desirable patina, the stylized profile has a wonderful folk art quality. Molded block letters that wrap around the heel clasp read simply "Gen. Mc Clellan. These are accompanied by a prominent Civil War-associated slogan: "The Union at all Hazards." The text is intermingled with 34 stars, which was equivalent to the number of states during the opening two years of the war, but was one star short by mid-1863 and two stars short by the time of the actual election in 1864. It's not unusual to encounter this feature in civil war campaign parade flags as well as all manner of flag-related ephemera. The iron was reportedly cast by G. & D. Cross of Morrisville, New York, though it is unsigned and I have not yet verified the attribution. I have seen two other examples, one of which had a broken and repaired tine on the U-shaped horns and newly painted surface, while the other appeared to have broken lifters and inferior, rusted patina. This is, hands-down, the best of the identified examples. Brief History of the 1864 Campaign: President Abraham Lincoln had a checkered relationship with his 1864 opponent, who he had formerly chosen as General-in-Chief of the entire Union Army. The career officer repeatedly knocked heads with his Commander-in-Chief. Having raised a well-trained and organized military force, McClellan often seemed reluctant to use it. By 1862, after losses in Virginia during the Peninsula Campaign, Lincoln grew frustrated with McClellan and the progression of the war and removed him from command. By the early part of 1864 the American people shared some of the same frustrations and Lincoln was no longer the clear choice for the White House. The nation was tired of war and the remains of the Democratic Party...
