Gothic Revival Style
The Gothic Revival movement (also called Victorian Gothic or Neo-Gothic) emerged in Britain in the 1740s, and reached its height in the late-19th century. Gothic Revival furniture's characteristics include such decorative flourishes as pointed arches, floral details, finials, heraldic motifs and linenfold carving.
The movement was rooted in religious and social conservatism. Gothic Revival's proponents, who included Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin, the architects of London’s Houses of Parliament (designed in 1840), believed that the art and architecture of the Middle Ages were authentically spiritual and inherently moral.
In the United States, the Gothic Revival movement shaped both public buildings and private houses. Numerous American schools were built in the early-19th century in a style now called Collegiate Gothic. Many builders and craftsmen were inspired by Andrew Jackson Downing’s widely read 1850 book Architecture for Country Houses, which posited that a family’s home should exemplify their values — and that the Gothic Revival style was particularly well-suited to scholars and clergymen. Furniture with detailing that mirrored that of Gothic Revival buildings appeared in the same period. Such pieces typically feature dark, intricately carved wood, and upholstery in velvet or leather.
Much like the castles or cathedrals that inspired them, Gothic Revival chairs, bookcases and beds make a bold design statement. And while you probably don’t have to cross a moat or raise a portcullis to get through your front door, a Gothic Revival piece will declare that your home is indeed your castle.

This antique pair of Gothic wall sconces for three lights or three candles each is another one of those antiques of which you immediately know that they are bound to find a new owner soon, because it ticks all the boxes. Perfectly handcrafted in the latter part of the 19th century these rare sconces have exactly the kind of patina that you wish to find on bronze Gothic antiques of this age. The heavy quality of the bronze and brass is right up there with the best you can find and the design of these decorative and meaningful works of Gothic art is extremely well balanced. The many perfect and all handcrafted Gothic elements in these three light candelabras are an absolute joy to look at. To us, the bronze gargoyle sculptures at the bottom are like the icing on the cake. What gargoyles stand for has been and still is subject to debate, but we best like the idea of them being there to frighten away evil spirits and bad energy. Mind you, the wires and the yellow tape that you now see in our photos will all be removed. You, the new owner, get to decide if you want to use them as candle candelabras or if you want us to rewire these sconces for you. We will do so free of charge and to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage upon arrival. When purchased by one of our American clients we will also attach American sockets inside the faux candles and also American power plugs. Over the decades we have bought and sold many Gothic Revival antiques from almost all the centuries since Gothic pieces have been around. This however is the first time that we ever found a pure Gothic photo album. This hand-crafted album dates from circa 1870-1890 and some of the antique photos are even older. The most eyecatching features (when this album is closed) are ofcourse the large, bronzed metal, Gothic hinges and they even still open and close perfectly on the side where this album closes and opens. Another great feature is the embossed leather Gothic decoration on the spine of this rare antique. It includes two Gothic trefoil symbols for the trinity, making this rare antique also a meaningful one. The guilded outsides of the pages makes it resemble the outsides of many large antique bibles and the multitude of photos inside (many Parisian) are images that tell part of the story of what life was like (for the well to do) in the mid 1800s in France. As many of you will know, the Pietà, depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of mother Mary after the crucifixion. Over the years we have seen this famous biblical scene portrayed in all kinds of materials, but this is the first time we have seen it in glazed and partially colored ceramic. The artist whom created this unique sculpture perfectly captured the sadness and despair of Mary and the disciples by her side. The care with which they are touching and holding the body of Christ also shows their love and affection for Jesus.
