Botanical Marvels of India: Bamboo and Durian in De Bry's 1601 Copper Engraving
Located in Langweer, NL
This 1601 engraving by Theodore de Bry, a master engraver and publisher of the late Renaissance period, depicts the flora of India with a remarkable degree of detail and artistry. The print is titled "DE ALGA SEV ARVNDINE INDICA, BAMBVS DICTA, ITEM DE arbore radicosa: & tandem de arbore Duryeons," which translates to "About the Seaweed or Reed of India, called Bamboo, also about the root tree: and finally about the Duryeons tree."
In the illustration, we see a lush depiction of a bamboo grove, with its characteristic tall and slender form, showcasing the plant's extensive root system and dense foliage. To the left, there is a tree bearing large, round fruits, likely the durian, labeled here as "Duryeons." The durian is known for its distinctive size, unique aroma, and spiky husk. The image captures both the exotic appeal and the utilitarian value of these plants, which were of great interest to European audiences unfamiliar with such tropical vegetation.
The visual composition conveys the tropical abundance and biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent. De Bry's engravings like this were highly sought after in Europe for their exotic subject matter and served to educate and fascinate the European public about the natural wonders of the world beyond their borders. As a historical document, this engraving provides insight into the botanical knowledge and the artistic conventions of the period, making it a valuable piece for both its historical significance and its aesthetic beauty.
De Bry's work is renowned for its attention to detail, and this print is a testament to his ability to capture the essence of exotic lands and their natural abundance. His engravings were among the first visual records to reach Europe from the New World and the East, fueling curiosity and fascination with distant lands. This particular piece is not only a work of art but also a historical document, offering insight into the botanical wealth of India as seen through the eyes of early modern Europeans...

17th Century French New Testament Religious Tapestry, Marriage of Mary & Joseph
Located in New York, NY
A French religious tapestry from Paris, circa 17th century, size 11' H x 11' W. This magnificent handwoven wool and silk wall hanging envisions the marriage of the New Testament figures, Mary and Joseph, with the High Priest flanked by Mary and Joseph at center and a dove above them, and with the central figures attended by a noblewoman and a group of men, and with a mother and child seated in the right foreground.
The central scene is enclosed within a border that is characterized by upper and lower central cartouches, supported by putti. It contains a star above, and the armorial of Pierre Guischard below. Six additional cartouches containing the symbols of the Evangelists run through the rest of the border, interspersed with fruiting and flowering elements, decorative swags, and birds.
Pierre Guischard (1614-1701) was doctor of Theology of the Holy Faculty of Paris and Great Master of the College of Navarre in Paris, Advisor, Chaplain and King Louis 14th...

1687 Portrait of Assan Aga by E. Nessenthaler: A Glimpse into Ottoman Nobility
Located in Langweer, NL
This etching and engraving is a portrait of Assan Aga, created by Elias Nessenthaler, a German artist, in the year 1687.
The artwork features Assan Aga, identified as "Magnus Aleppo Bassa," which suggests he held a significant position in Aleppo, likely a high-ranking official or governor ("Bassa" being a variant of "Pasha", a high-ranking title). The text beneath the portrait indicates that he was a significant adversary ("Perniciem") to the emperor of the Turks, hinting at a historical narrative of conflict or betrayal ("Coniuratus hostis" suggesting a conspiratorial enemy).
The portrait shows Assan Aga adorned in elaborate attire with a turban, indicative of his status and cultural significance during that period. The detail in the etching, from the facial features to the clothing, reflects the artistic skill of Elias Nessenthaler and the styles of portraiture common in the late 17th century. The framing of the image with decorative borders adds to its formal presentation and would have likely been intended for an audience interested in the political and military figures of the time.
Assan Aga, also known as Magnus Aleppo Bassa, was likely a historical figure of significance in Aleppo, bearing the title of Pasha, which indicates a high-ranking official or governor in the Ottoman Empire. The detailed portrait by Elias Nessenthaler, housed in the Royal Collection, hints at his importance during his time. For further details on Assan Aga, you can visit the Royal Collection Trust...

Portraits of the monarchs Louis XIII and Anne-Marie of Austria as hunters.
Located in Madrid, ES
Portraits of the monarchs Louis XIII and Anne-Marie of Austria as hunters. Oil on canvas. Possibly Madrid school, 17th century.
Pair of full-length portraits showing the characters against natural backgrounds, with landscapes with mountains in the distance and trees. The male character, who looks directly at the viewer, has dark hair and a fine moustache, and is dressed in a ruff, a doublet, leather gloves, a blued breastplate with gold details, breeches, white silk stockings and cavalier boots. The lady, who modestly lowers her gaze, has her head partially covered with a hat decorated with a brooch and white feathers; she is dressed in a ruff and a dress with a wide-skirted doublet and skirt, wide-mouthed gloves and a short cloak with a decorated edge gathered around the left arm and placed over the right side of the skirt. Alongside these “hunting” dresses, they appear carrying firearms and accompanied by large dogs. The king's dog is standing alertly, turning his head to one side. The queen's dog is sitting looking at her, with a collar and a rope that she holds in her left hand. The male subject is clearly the French King Louis XIII (Fontainebleau, 1601-Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1643), monarch of France and Navarre (1610-1643), son of Henry IV of France and Marie de Médicis and father of Louis XIV of France. Compare with other portraits: by Rubens, painted around 1622-1625 at the Norton Simon Museum (Pasadena, California, USA); by Philippe de Champaigne, painted in 1635 and kept at the Museo del Prado (Madrid, Spain); the painting by Frans Pourbus the Younger from the 1920s at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Chambéry (France); etc. Louis XIII married Anne of Austria, daughter of Philip III of Spain, in 1615. This was brought about by the marriage agreement of Fountainebleau (1611), which stipulated the future wedding of the Prince of Asturias, Philip IV, with the French princess Isabella of Bourbon, and that of the French monarch with Anne. Anne Maria Mauricia of Austria and Austria-Styria (Valladolid, 1601-Paris, 1666) was an Infanta of Spain and Portugal as the daughter of Philip III of Spain and Margaret of...
