Monumental Fireback with the Châtelet Coat of Arms
About the Item
This exceptional iron cast fireback of 750 kg, richly decorated, was made at the end of the Renaissance, around 1624. It bears in its center a shield with a band charged with three silver fleurs-de-lys, supported by two griffins. The shield is topped with a crowned helmet and the crest is decorated with an owl with spread wings, also crowned. At either end, two winged women stand out, resembling mermaids. To this day, the only other identical fireback known until now is located at the Chaumont dungeon, a remnant of the Counts of Champagne castle, listed in the book Plaque de cheminées héraldiques by Philippe Palasi. The arms found on this plate belong to Louis-Jules du Châtelet de Pierrefitte (1594-1671) who was a knight, baron of Cirey and Saint-Amand, and an officer of the king.
