At the center stands a prominently featured horse (11), with other equids such as the African zebra (13) and a small donkey or wild ass (12) nearby. Above and around them are a range of fascinating mammals: the giant anteater...

Pair of Neo-Greek Bronze Floor Lamps by F. Barbedienne, France, circa 1860
Located in PARIS, FR
Height without/with lampshade : 168/185 cm (66,1 / 72,8 in.) ; Base : 43 x 43 cm (16,9 x 16,9 in.)
Beautiful pair of neo-Greek floor lamps in bronze with double patina, composed of cylindrical lamps, decorated on the body with a rotating frieze representing women dressed in the Antique style weaving and spinning, surmounted by lampshades with cut sides in red pleated silk with golden braid.
They are placed on pedestals from which hang thin chains attached to the slender shaft decorated with stylized leaves and flowers, resting on a tripod base decorated with large palmettes and ending in lion’s paws.
The stylistic repertoire used here, composed in particular of palmettes, masks, and nymphs, evokes Greek Antiquity, as does the reuse of forms of furniture and objects such as tripods and antique vases.
The rediscovery in the 18th century of the archaeological remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum allowed artists of all disciplines to draw inspiration from Antiquity while reinterpreting it.
This trend did not fade and, in the 19th century, many personalities fitted out their interiors with neo-Greek furniture, as was the case for the Maison Pompéienne built in 1856 by the architect Alfred Normand (1822-1909) for Prince Napoleon, or Empress Eugénie who bought from the Maison Barbedienne pedestals inspired by antique tripods.
Related work :
Pedestal model presented by Maison Barbedienne at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1855. On this occasion, Empress Eugénie bought it for her bathroom in the Château de Saint-Cloud. This model pleased the Empress so much that she ordered two other pairs in 1858 for her boudoir in the palaces of Compiègne and Fontainebleau. (see photo attached)

Antique French Tapestry Rug 2'0'' x 3'9''
Located in New York, NY
Who’s got a dog in this fight? Clearly, two male peasants do, as they try to separate the two battling beasts with a hayfork and a stick while a mother and child cower to the right. The rustic character of the scene is emphasized by a farmhouse to the right. In the foreground are logs, leafy plants and a brook or stream. Trees in full seasonal leaf close off the scene at the left and background the excitement. The palette is warm, with an assortment of browns, greys, greens, straw, sand and sienna. The clothes of the peasant women are touched in pale blue-greys, light yellow and ecru. The fallen dog is in shades of brown, while the collared aggressor has a dark brown and off white coat.
This wall hanging is executed in slit tapestry weave with wool pattern wefts. Measurres: 2'0'' x 3'9''.
The styles of clothing indicate an early 19th century date for the depicted event, but the piece is clearly later. Tapestry depictions of peasant scenes began in the 18th century in both Flanders and France with the work of the Flemish artist David Teniers II. These were popular in the cities with the rising affluent upper middle class who never came in contact with the real peasanterie, but who wanted to show their imagined roots in an agrarian lifestyle. In the 19th century, these tapestries were particularly popular in France. Unlike earlier tapestry sets...

Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865

Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865
This highly detailed hand-colored lithograph was published circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific illustrator Traugott Bromme. It is part of his ambitious natural history series *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, combining zoological knowledge with elegant visual presentation for 19th-century educational use.
This particular plate highlights a variety of marine and deep-sea fish, focusing on distinct anatomical adaptations. Dominating the top of the composition is a powerful swordfish (14) with its extended bill, flanked by a streamlined tuna (15), herring (13), and mackerel-like species (12). Below them is an extraordinary anglerfish (4), shown with its characteristic lure and wide, flattened head—typical of deep-sea species.
Also included are armored or scaleless fish like the fangtooth (3), dragonfish (1), and several unusual tropical or reef species with prominent spines or patterning. A garfish or needlefish (20) stretches across the bottom, opposite a striped wrasse or perch (5). Other species include the European sea bass (7), gobies and blennies (8, 9, 10), a butterflyfish (16), and a few primitive or armored species with bony plates (19).
The composition reflects Bromme’s emphasis on both scientific accuracy and visual curiosity, with each fish labeled and arranged to showcase size, structure, and behavior. These images were essential in a pre-photographic age for understanding marine biodiversity and taxonomy.
This is a compelling example of antique scientific illustration...
