Carme Déchaussé - 1862 Hand-Colored Lithograph of a Discalced Carmelite Monk This stunning 1862 hand-colored lithograph portrays a Carme Déchaussé, or Discalced Carmelite monk, an emblem of humility and devotion. The figure is depicted in the characteristic simple brown habit and white mantle, with sandals on his feet—true to the order's name, which means "without shoes." The lithograph is part of the Album ou Collection Complète et Historique des Costumes de la Cour de Rome, a richly illustrated publication that details the diverse attire of Catholic orders and clergy. The Discalced Carmelites, a reform of the Carmelite Order established by Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross in the 16th century, emphasize poverty, prayer, and community. Their attire reflects these values, remaining largely unchanged through centuries and still in use today by members of the order worldwide. Yet no other city offers such a collection, from the monuments of Augustus to those of Sixtus V and Leo XII, from pagan temples to saints' tombs and martyrs' shrines. This union of grandeur is further illustrated daily by the magnificence of Catholic rites. With this album, we present the splendid costumes of the Papal dignitaries and the humble attire of religious orders. These costumes were inspired by the traditions handed down through centuries and were designed with unique precision by the talented artist G. Perugini. A very fine pair of mid-Victorian parcel gilt bronze oil lamps, by Hinks, each modelled as a bearded warrior dressed in the style of a Saxon king with a crowned helmet, broadsword and double-headed battle axe, standing in front of a slender scroll support surmounted by a cut glass oil reservoir, all set on a shaped ormolu base encircled with a victor’s wreath of oak leaves, and raised on an octagonal bronze base, converted to electricity, stamped ‘Hinks & Sons Patent’ on the fitting. English, circa 1860. Footnote: James Hinks (1816-1905). Leaving home at 16 he tried many trades from wood turning, japanning, brush making, die sinking, medal making and even being a pub landlord, before manufacturing oil lamps. This is a fabulous French antique ormolu mounted bureau plat which features fine quality floral marquetry and which dates from around 1860. This beautiful piece of furniture has been made with artistic marquetry requiring the highest level of craftsmanship. The surface of the table top of this antique ormolu mounted bureau plat features very intricate floral marquetry decoration. Using a number of different and exotic veneers which include walnut, goncalo alves, satinwood, burr walnut, and purpleheart, the level of detail present here can only be described as extraordinary. The central panel is worthy of particular attention, it being inlaid with a representation of an urn on a flower filled satinwood background together with a decorative border of foliage which has been rendered in mahogany and burr walnut. As you can see from the images provided the imposing table top is completed with a highly decorative ormolu border which adds an additional level of elegance to this antique bureau plat...
