About the Item

Near the Great Wall there is the important city of Ningxia, the capital of the homonymous region which extended into Inner Mongolia and which was later included in the province of Gansu. This place renowned as an important commercial center has given its name to the oldest Chinese carpets, which were produced in the region, near the Tibetan border. Characteristic of the oldest pieces is the thick knot and the particularly soft consistency, the structure is made of cotton and the fleece in a particularly silky, soft and shaved wool. The decorative motifs are those of the classical tradition. The ocher yellow background is characteristic of the oldest pieces.
