Late 19th Century Oversized Chinese Peking Rug in All-Over Leaf Pattern
Located in Barrington, IL
This exquisite oversized Chinese Peking rug from the late 19th century is a rare treasure of timeless elegance and craftsmanship. Featuring an all-over leaf pattern, the rug is woven in a soft and harmonious palette of ivory, cream, and antique white, accented by a striking blue border that mirrors the motif with graceful leaf designs. The weave is exceptionally fine, showcasing the skill and artistry typical of the finest Qing dynasty-era Peking rugs. Its balanced composition and subtle color transitions make it a versatile piece—ideal for both classic and contemporary interiors seeking sophistication with an antique touch. What makes this rug truly remarkable is its size, age, and condition. Whether used as a centerpiece in a grand living space or as a statement of historical luxury, this rug offers an unmatched blend of elegance, rarity, and quiet beauty. 19th Century Ningxia Pillar Rug, with Beige Field and Blue Details
Located in New York, NY
Ningxia Pillar rug, XIX century. This special hand knotted carpet was wrapped around a pillar or a column of the buddhis temples or in the imperial palaces in China, Mongolia and Tibet ( in Tibet they were called Katum). This carpet surrounds the column creating a refined optical effect . This item brings in its decoration, a very important pattern of the imperial Chinese culture. Starting from the bottom, we can appreciate the proportion and the balance of the so called “Rainbow border”, consisting of parallel wavy stripes in a soft lovely combination of colors, radiating from the edge of the field. This kind of border was used only at the bottom of the rug in conjunction with the “sacred mountain” motif. The center of this pillar carpet is decorated with two opposite dragons linked by a bold “ruyi cloud” (in Chinese Ruyi means “as you wish”). The Ruyi cloud motif is used in earlier Chinese than are drifting clouds. The dragons represented in this pillar carpet, bring five claws, synonym of noble and monastic importance. The Chinese imperial carpets...
