About the Item

The double niche design of this refined and elegant early Kula rug, originating from Western Anatolia, descends from 16th and 17th century Ottoman rugs of the Oushak and Transylvanian types. Here the typical configuration of the niche is transposed to create space for the three large rhomboidal devices, placed within a soft red cartouche contained by a rectangular light blue reserve punctuated by stylised floral elements. The choice of a soft palette is quite characteristic of this group of Ottoman rugs. The restrained colouration imparts a textile-like aesthetic to the composition. Rugs of this type confer an aristocratic, old-world mood to interiors.
