About the Item

Tulu rugs represent one of the earliest forms of nomadic pile weaving, typically knotted with a medium-high pile as they were meant as bedding rugs for the tent. Woven in the Karapinar area in central Anatolia, these are distinguished by the use of fine mohair wool. The patterns are typically quite simple, ranging from completely open fields to stacked niches, with basic geometric patterns such as the one here representing some interesting variants. Here the checkerboard pattern consists of an alternation of red and green squares, woven on a weft-faced wool foundation in two panels, as these were woven on narrow nomadic looms. One end is embellished by wool tassels in red and green. A genuine tribal rug of ancient modernity.

Antique Minimalist Jajim Flat-Woven Rug with Vertical Green/Red Stripes
Located in Milan, IT
A very graphic tribal Kilim composed of two joined panels each containing a sequence of green and red vertical stripes of various widths, each framed by a narrow ivory stripe. The result is a wool flat-weave with a mirror image pattern having a central stripe that is different and wider than the others. What makes this example rather unique is the richness of the two colors, obtained from natural dyes, as well the generous width of the vertical stripes. Furthermore, the quality of the individual dyes, which include a wonderful emerald green obtained from the indigo plant and a clear madder red, are indicative of an early vintage. The resulting visual effect is highly abstract and reminiscent more of Western contemporary art...
