Georgian Armchair Carved Inlaid Walnut, English Sheraton circa 1790
About the Item
This a fine handmade English, George 111rd, Sheraton period hardwood, possibly walnut armchair with good carved detail and reupholstered drop in seat, dating to the late 18th century, circa 1790.
The whole piece is well executed with a lightness of style emphasised by the curved sweeping arms and bow fronted seat. The chair has many further quality features;
* Incised detail to broad top cresting rail
* incised reeded detail to back uprights and tops of arms as they curve upwards to the back.
* Finely decorated cross rail with carved geometric lattice work having central rectangle inlaid with feature hardwood, crossbanded edge and boxwood line inlay.
* Detailed ring turned arm supports
The chair is made of solid hardwood, possibly walnut with the timber carefully chosen for its figured grain pattern as per the top rail. The legs are square in section, the rear legs raking slightly outwards and the front legs tapering with the legs having four stretchers between in an "H" arrangement for added strength .
The drop in seat has been reupholstered in a complimentary fabric which could easily be changed if required.
This elegant armchair has developed a lovely soft patination and depth of colour where it has been used and polished in well over 200 years of use.
Note: We have also listed two pairs of side chairs of the same type and design.
