"Juliette" Armchair by Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison, France 1950s

About the Item

Renowned for their innovative, high-quality furniture, Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron combined elegant form with straightforward functionality to create their iconic designs. The Juliette armchair is one of their most notable pieces designed for their company, Votre Maison.
This armchair features a solid oak frame characterised by its sculptural construction, a hallmark of the duo’s style. The chair's backrest is composed of six slightly curved spindles, which create a round and inviting silhouette that provides both comfort and an aesthetic appeal. The armrests, also featuring a curved structure, extend seamlessly into the legs, giving the piece a cohesive and organic look. To ensure functionality and comfort, as expected of mid-century modern furniture, the generous seat and back cushions are upholstered in a striped fabric. The cushions are held securely in place by fabric loops to ensure they remain properly positioned even after prolonged periods of use.
This armchair truly exemplifies the thoughtful design and timeless appeal of Guillerme et Chambron’s work, blending natural materials with mid-century modern aesthetics. Whether used individually or in pairs, the Juliette armchair remains a sought-after piece for collectors and design enthusiasts alike. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair’s cushions have been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known. The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’ son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the reins in 1983.

Pair of Guillerme et Chambron "Edouard" Armchairs for Votre Maison, France 1960s
By Votre Maison, Guillerme et Chambron
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, or a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France. As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about these exceptional chair models. The “Edouard” is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frames, from the curving lines to the straighter spindles comprising the backrests. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The fuchsia-coloured upholstery beautifully complements the wood tone, and the small textured loops of fabric highlight the smoothness of the frames’ surface. The French caquetoire chairs...
