Märta Blomstedt "Aulanko" chair

About the Item

Märta Blomstedt designed this lounge chair originally for the iconic Aulanko Hotel in the Hämeenlinna area in Finland in the 1940s. One reason for this chairs incredible demand is the comfort factor, it is just unbelievably comfortable to sit, sleep, or slouch in. It is a dignified and rich piece of design from every direction. This piece is sold in its current condition. It has been upholstered with mustard yellow fabric sometime in the past. We can provide upholstery if needed, with the popular trend in sheepskin or any other type of fabric at an extra cost of course.

  • "Aulanko" Armchair by Märta Blomstedt for Hotel Aulanko, Finland, 1930s
    By Märta Blomstedt
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The Finnish architect and designer, Märta Blomstedt, was one of the driving forces of the Finnish functionalism movement. Her first works were noted for their functional, rather than decorative appearance, which clearly changed as evidence by these famous “Aulanko” armchairs. Blomstedt designed all aspects of her buildings including the furnishings, demonstrated in one of her most noted designs of the Hotel Aulanko. The hotel was conceived as a single work of art and the furnishings, dishes and textiles were part of the project. This model – designed in 1939 - got its name after this architectural project and was specifically designed for the lobby of the hotel in Hämeenlinna, Finland. While it has been stated before that this model was heavily inspired by Danish designer, Fleming Lassen's genre-defining 'Tired Man' wing chair from 1935, the “Aulanko” became world-famous in its own right. Most notable is the voluminous body that stands on four bun shaped feet. While this model originally had tubular steel legs, various iterations were produced for the hotel over the subsequent decades. This version with spherical wooden bun feet is one of the earliest examples created and until the late 1940s, Artek marketed this version of the armchair. The flowing, round lines are beautifully accentuated by the light sheepskin. Furthermore, the warm brown colour of the wooden feet nicely contrasts to the soft, light colour of the upholstery, creating a cosy look, not to mention that wooden bun feet make a long-lasting, rock solid foundation for any chair. The large curves and rounded edges of the body and feet are very inviting, asking the user to be embraced by the soft sheepskin. The Aulanko Hotel in Hämeenlinna (the city of Jean Sibelius) was in its time a luxury hotel of international relevance. In this “Aulanko” chair...

  • Pair of “Laila” Armchairs in Sheepskin by Ilmari Lappalainen, Finland 1948
    By Ilmari Lappalainen
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Laila” model by the Finnish designer, Ilmari Lappalainen, originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection. This pair of “nr. 238” armchairs are from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic mid-century modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating, that it prevented back problems. These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushions and back with five tufted buttons. The bodies have the classic Nordic look, which explains the contemporary popularity of these armchairs both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the soft sheepskin upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well. Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. These chairs were created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930, the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s present Laila armchairs...

  • Organic Danish Cabinetmaker Armchair with Solid Beech Legs, Denmark, 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This early Danish mid-century armchair is a great example of the unification of comfort and delicate design elements. The touch of Danish Modernism is recognizable in the exquisite materials, the craftsmanship, and in the elegantly curved and rounded edges. This particular chair silhouette has been popular since the 1930s, from around the time Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, the “Tired Man”, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935, and Finnish architect Marta Blomstedt’s chair...
