"Mermaid" Pearl Finished Armchair Designed by Tokujin Yoshioka for Driade

About the Item

"Mermaid" is a pearl finished polyethylene monobloc iconic armchair, designed by Tokujin Yoshioka and manufactured by Driade, available in white, black or green colors. Outdoor and indoor use. White version only is available in quick ship. DIMENSIONS: D. 25.5", W. 27.5", H. 32.8", Seat H. 17.1" Where do you think mermaids would seat rolling up their long tails at sea? Certainly not on rationalist thrones or minimalist stools, perhaps on ancient rocks shaped by the sea. Tokujin Yoshioka seems to take inspiration from such fantasy world by building a seat like a mysterious niche. It's never by chance that names of objects are chosen. At the base a large hollowed fold where you can gather your legs (or your tails, if you're a mermaid), on the back a double sinuous fold in order to model armrests. TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA, born in Japan in 1967 and winner of many awards, with pieces on display at the MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt in New York, the Victoria & Albert in London and the Vitra Design Museum, trained along with Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, opened his own studio in 2000, and has worked with Japanese and international companies such as Hermès, Toyota, BMW and Swarovski, designing showrooms and installations. As a result of the success of the Honey-pop paper chair in 2001, he began establishing increasingly close links with the world of interior design, developing projects for Driade, Moroso and Kartell, amongst the others. The main feature of his creations is their poetic, light, dreamlike quality. His products, interiors and installations are the result of painstaking, complex research carried out on simple materials, combined with experimental technology. The awards he won include Design Miami, Designer of the Year 2007, the Wallpaper Design Awards 2008 and Elle Decoration International Design Award, Designer of the Year 2009.
