18th Century Chinese Chippendale Mahogany Gainsborough Library Armchair
Located in Lymington, GB
A very good Chippendale-period mahogany Gainsborough armchair, circa 1760.
This is a lovely example of an early-George III Gainsborough library armchair in the sophisticated Chinese taste of the period.
With well-executed blind-fret carving to the square legs and arm supports.
Note the unusual treatment of the gently-outswept padded arms. Furthermore there is subtle shaping to the top of the back.
The 'H' stretcher with pierced Gothick carving.
Professionally upholstered to a high standard and overstuffed in a neutral soft velvet, with float buttons and close nailed. Raised on old brass castors. Lovely, rich, old colour and patina. In excellent condition with a sturdy frame throughout.
These Georgian library armchairs are sometimes also known as Martha Washington chairs...

Restored Metamorphic Antique Regency Armchair to Library Steps Gillows Lancaster
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer this very large and collectable fully restored Regency circa 1810-1820 metamorphic armchair which converts into Library steps after the original 18th century design by Gillows of Lancaster.
This wonderful piece of English history has been on a journey of restoration, the frame has been washed back and French polished by a Victorian trained polisher, the leather upholstery has been stripped back, hand dyed six times, antiqued and sealed, it has a lovely rich reddish brown colour to it.
This chair is larger than any other of its type you would have seen, it is a important and extremely expensive looking thing that commands attention in any setting. The original made by Gillows can currently be viewed in the Victorian & Albert museum, below is an extra from their listing.
The period 1800-1825 was a great one for ‘patent’ or ‘metamorphic’ furniture This chair, which transforms into a short set of steps for use with bookshelves, is close to a design for a ‘Library Chair’ published in Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository of the Arts in July 1811, which was made by the London firm of Morgan and Saunders, of Catherine Street, Strand.
They were well known for their ingenious furniture, including reading chairs with writing surfaces attached and a great variety of travelling beds...

Armchair Wing Sleeping Walnut Upholstered Bargello Cresting Baroque H-Stretcher
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
A museum quality, late-17th century, walnut, upholstered sleeping armchair
• Exceptionally rare model; one of the first models of upholstered armchair with the addition of the wings intended to conceal draughts.
• Transitional form : many of the carved features are characteristic of Baroque furniture dating from 1680 and the incorporation of upholstery is influenced by the desire for comfort post restoration of Charles II introducing French fashions to the English court.
• Striking, statement piece. The cresting, “H” stretcher and scrollwork carving which features throughout the chair inject gravitas.
• Practical size and ergonomic comfortable design, suitable for regular use.
The original, carved, walnut cresting supported by a pair of dragons with scrollwork either side of a central stylised leaf spray. The shaped rectangular back with wings. The sweeping arms with carved scroll ends supported by tapering turned uprights emerging from blocks. The rectangular seat supported by double scroll carved and column turned legs joined by an ‘H’stretcher which mirrors the shape of the back in the centre with finial, column turned side and back stretcher and back legs. Exceptional original colour and patina. c.1690.
CONDITION : re-upholstered in a recreation of 17th century, Italian, bargello embroidery which is characteristic of the period. Tiny marks, wear and losses as expected throughout the armchair. The finial is a C19 or early C20 replacement. The stretcher has suffered from worm damage and there are replaced sections at either end of 1” and 1½ “ respectively, and an area to the left of the finial has been filled. This work was not done by me and has some age to it and the finial was probably replaced at the same time. The armchair is sturdy and suitable for regular use.
PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Cheyne Walk, London
RELATED : Few sleeping chairs...

David Horan Paper armchair for Béton Brut, UK, 2022
By David Horan
Located in London, GB
David Horan (born in Dublin, 1982) is a multidisciplinary designer and manufacturer based in London. With a Master of Arts in Design Products from the Royal College of Art 2013, he cut his cloth with London-designers Faye Toogood and Michael Anastassiades, before opening his own studio in 2021.
This handmade armchair is part of the inaugural furniture and lighting collection by Horan entitled Paper. The collection ‘Paper’, designed exclusively with Béton Brut gallery, sees Horan as a modern decoupeur, applying his material to an original series of works. The magic of paper is grounded in forms as precise as they are architectonic. Evoking Deco and Classical, the geometries contain harmony in ratio.
‘Paper’ is as much an experiment in de-composition as re-composition, the Dragon Skin armchairs, left raw, are made from vintage handmade paper...
