Rare pair of vintage 'Westside' armchairs by Ettore Sottsass for Knoll, 1983 in good condition. We have these on sale now! (original price was $9500) Iconic west side designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1983. Stylish and very comfortable oversized chairs in 3 different shades of red and violet on heavy enameled steel feet. The lounge chairs still have their original upholstery which is astonishingly well preserved. Overall they are in good to very good original condition with no major flaws and ready to use. One arm-rest shows a bit of slight deformation. Labelled Knoll at the bottom. Dimensions are H.30.7" x W.38.2 x D.29.52". Seating height is 14.17 cm. Provenance: derives from a Villa in Vienna. These will sell as a pair only and will ship crated and internationally. We do offer white glove service in NYC and LA. In 1983, two years after the founding of Memphis, Sottsass splintered off from his collective to partner with Knoll Studio, creating the Eastside and Westside collections. Inspired by his lifelong love of Viennese Biedermeier chairs, characterized by plush seats with clean lines and minimal adornment, the collection consisted of geometric sofas and lounge chairs in color-blocked upholsteries. In spite of his iconoclasm, Sottsass had a deep appreciation of ancient art and architecture—particularly Sumerian, Assyrian and Chinese—resulting in the decision to shoot the collection against the backdrop of the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Designed by Ignazio Gardella in 1957, the Digamma lounge chair is a comfortable chair with roots in the late Italian modernist tradition. Its rational construction features two geometric sections - the rectangular upholstered back and seat - bound by a firm upholstered frame. The black metallic legs are finished off with Gardella's iconic brass 'duck' feet. The armchair has a three-position reclining backrest offering additional comfort and adjustability. This chair is a custom version realized by Santa & Cole for Kabinet Hubert, upholstered and sewn by hand in an emerald green Lelièvre fabric. This soft and dense fabric is a delicate combination of chenille and bouclé yarns. Ignazio Gardella was a member of the so-called third generation of the Modern Movement. He is considered one of the greatest exponents of Italian Rationalism, although he followed its principles in a much more personal way, searching to overcome its limitations. 19th Century Pair of English Victorian Leather Armchairs

This is a handsome pair of antique Victorian mahogany and leather club armchairs, circa 1880 in date. This lovely pair was made from masterly crafted hand-carved solid mahogany with an interesting hand-carved crest of a bird on top of each. They have been reupholstered in a sumptuous chocolate brown leather with button backs and stand on their original brass and porcelain castors. There is no mistaking their beautiful and stylish design, which is certain to make it a treasured addition to one of the rooms in your home. THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THESE CHAIRS ARE MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully restored and reupholstered in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 106 x width 68 x depth 80. Dimensions in inches: Height 3 feet, 6 inches x width 2 feet, 3 inches x depth 2 feet, 7 inches. Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as burr walnut and coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘flame’ mahogany and ‘fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments).
